Celebrating Baby Your Way: Alternative Shower Ideas for Every Kind of Family
Having to plan a baby shower in the midst of all things birth prep, postpartum plans, and newborn prep can be quite the undertaking. Everyone’s journey is different, and it's totally okay to think about exploring other options if a baby shower just doesn't quite feel in alignment for you and your family, for whatever reason!
Baby showers can be such wonderful celebrations and gatherings for lots of families, but just because that is the norm or traditional path, doesn't mean it's the only. Many parents crave intimacy and privacy during such a vulnerable and special season, which is completely valid! You also may be growing your family not for the first time, and wanting to welcome this next chapter in a different way. Not to mention, baby showers can often come with additional expenses that may be adding more to your plate. This time should be filled with meaning and intent, not stress.
Here are some creative and alternative ways to celebrate baby’s journey earth side:
Blessingway
A blessing way is an opportunity for loved ones, traditionally elder women and current inner support system, to surround the birthing parent and focus on honoring the experience of bringing baby to this world and speaking well wishes for the journey ahead. Oftentimes, the eldest living matriarch of the birthing parents line will begin by telling their birth story, then the next in the line will share theirs and so on until the line arrives and the birthing parents own birthing story told by their parent. People go around the room and give a wish to both mom and baby, and some women will often approach the expecting parent and offer a foot wash and massage with soothing florals and oils. You can make it your own and include rituals that call to you.
Postpartum meal prep party
Getting in nutrient dense meals is so crucial for that fourth trimester, and it can also be one of the most challenging pieces to maintain, especially if you have multiple littles at home! Having a freezer meal party is a great way to stock up on hearty meals that can be quickly reheated, while also enjoying quality time with loved ones. Not sure how to answer those “how can I help?” and “what can I do?” texts? Pick a date and time that works for your family, and invite loved ones over to help prepare freeze-friendly meals that will keep you sustained during your recovery!
Nesting party
Growing a family comes with it many tedious tasks and what sometimes feels like a never ending to-do list. Not to mention having to keep up with regular day-to-day responsibilities, while also making an entire human being! It’s understandable if energy levels are a little lower than usual these days, and having a nesting party can be a great way to be supported by your loved ones in a productive and tangible way. Are you wanting to set up the baby monitor? Is the bottle sanitizer still in the box and onesies unwashed?
That's okay! Order some pizza and wings and have your loved ones come lend a helping hand in exchange for good company and full bellies.
Choosing the right celebration for you
When you're thinking about which avenue might be best for your family, ask yourself these questions:
How is your energy feeling? Consider whether hosting a gathering is something you have capacity for, or if something simpler feels more grounding.
What works best for your financial needs? Simple options can feel just as special without adding additional financial stress.
What kind of care do you crave most? Think about whether tangible assistance around the house, or simply quiet quality time with loved ones would nourish you best.
Are there cultural traditions or rituals calling to you? You might want to weave in sacred ancestral traditions or family practices that carry personal meaning for this season.
How can your community support your fourth trimester? Having warm freezer meals, hands-on household help, or a safe emotional space with loved ones can sometimes go a lot further than the traditional gift.
At the end of the day, there’s no one-size-fits-all way to celebrate a growing family. Whether you envision a traditional baby shower, a cozy gathering with loved ones, or a day dedicated to preparing for postpartum, the most meaningful celebrations are the ones that honor your needs, values, and vision for your family.
At One Love, we believe preparing for a baby goes far beyond stocking the nursery. It’s about building your village, feeling confident in your birth and postpartum journey, and surrounding yourself with people who will support you through every season of parenthood.
